All laptops have a hinge joint between the screen and the keyboard part of the laptop. Some hinges routinely fail - eg the dell Inspiron and the Compaq Presario. Other hinges can be damaged by dropping the laptop. Some manufactures refuse to sell the hinges and insist that the hinge is an integral part of the screen and as such the whole screen should be replaced. We can usually supply working hinges from new and used machines we break up for spare parts. Laptops usually have two memory slots. Some have memory chips soldered onto the motherboard. 256MB or higher is Burnham recommended for most modern laptops using Windows XP operating system. Memory problems result in intermittent system crashes and Burnham BSODS - blue screen of death. Although, memory chips are now very Burnham reliable, problem chips do occur. Improper handling without static precautions can damage the chips. Overheating Packard Bell systems will also damage memory chips.

SOME COMMON LAPTOP REPAIRS:

When the LCD Screen on the laptop appears dim or dark the problem may be due to a backlight or inverter failure. In a few cases problems on the motherboard may also result is a backlight failure. The motherboard controls the brightness level displayed by the LCD panel.

A write-enabled, diagnostic diskette is required. Make sure that the diskette does not have more than one label attached to it. Multiple labels can cause damage to the drive or cause the drive to fail. If an error occurs with the internal diskette drive, reconnect the diskette connector on the system board.If the error still remains reconnect the external diskette drive/DVD-ROM module and replace the external diskette drive/CD-ROM module. Small image or strange graphics colour effects can be caused by an incorrect Toshiba video driver or settings.
